The Secret Place

When you were a kid, did you have a secret fort or a hiding place that you went to when you needed solitude? As adults, there is a hiding place for us to go to as well.  Psalms 32:7 says “You are my hiding place; you will preserve me from trouble; you will surround me with songs of deliverance” and Psalms 91:1 says “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

When we have quiet time with God, we may find a quiet corner of our home so we can focus on our Heavenly Father without distractions and pour our hearts out to Him. It is an intentional act to go to “that place” just as it is an intentional act to go to our secret place in God.  It is called a secret place because it is not intended to be known or seen by others.  Matthew 6:6 says: “But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”

There is an aspect of personal prayer that is essential for every believer because it is in this place of close communion that we experience the greatest joy our Heavenly Father has towards us.  Zephaniah 3:17 says;  “The LORD your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save;  He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”   This is beautiful and reminds me of a parent singing over their child as they hold them in their arms, adoring and protecting them from all harm.

When we don’t hear His love song towards us, it isn’t because He stopped singing, but perhaps it is because we haven’t been in the secret place in a while to hear.  Today let’s take the time to be still and find this secret place in prayer because although it is a secret place, it is no secret if you’ve been there.
